Friday Flashback: Fall Steels

"Let me see the inside of your lip"
This weeks Friday Flashback is from 2005 on the Methow.  Dave and Chone got together for the buddy pic with a nice native buck that came from behind the money rock in the Jeremy run.  This weekend was a source of great memories for the three of us, including Dave eating an entire pumpkin for for an appetizer, and Chone's whitefish grenade.

Twin Bridges Celebrity Sightings

Beetle, Buccola and Chone dropping the anchor
There has been some recent celebrity sightings around TB lately, both of the video kind. Old friend and Idaho Ginger "The Beard" made a brief visit a couple of weeks ago to drop off some sick new fly wallets and his latest DVD.  A few weeks later, Good buddy R.A. "The Beetle" Beattie came through with a really old friend of mine and excellent road trip companion, Ryan Buccola.  The duo made a stop in Dillon, followed by Bozeman and Jackson.  The life of a traveling fish junkie isn't for everyone, but these guys have it dialed in, and are as good at it as they come.

Non-Traditional Fishing Dog: Mini Wiener!

Jeff and Mini-dog
This latest edition of Non-traditional fishing dog is submitted by Jeff and his mini-wiener dog, appropriately named mini.  My mini dog ruby got the chance to meet mini last month and terrorized the backyard for a couple of days.  Thanks again for the submission Jeff and Hillary, stickers are on their way!

If you have a non-traditional fishing dog, send me an email and I'll throw it up on the blog.

Sounds of Summer

Roost legend Westernly, rolling the dice.
The sound of fiberglass sliding on rocks, a chernobyl ant getting swallowed and the rolling thunder of an evening thunder storm are all sounds that remind me of summer in Southwest Montana.  None of these compare to the echoing sound of 5 dice rattling around in an old cigar box.  Liar's dice aka Shakey Box is the game of choice in the evenings around these parts, and you better have a good poker face and a fresh mule to start the evening off right.

First Fish Mojo

Mike starting off on the right foot (or close to two!)
I've always been a believer that a fish on the first cast a sure curse for a crappy day of fishing.  This past week Mike from the Bronx thought he'd step it up a notch and catch a giant brown for his first fish of a five day trip.  It turned out that this has no impact on luck for the rest of the day, let alone the rest of the trip, and Mike and his family showed the local fish how it's done.

Friday Flashback

Ke'lah at a secret 509 spring creek.
This weeks flashback is of Ke'lah, at a popular eastern washington spring creek.  This was one of the first times I ever took her fly fishing.  She clearly had mad fish holding skills early on.

Fly Shop Innovations

Cash or credit accepted!
What do you do if you are an innovative, smaller, destination fly shop, and want to help your customers who show up at all hours of the day?  Put a vending machine in front of your shop loaded with tippet, flies, leaders and the essentials of course!  Darc Knobel, 509 legend and all around great guy, set this machine up in front of his Ephrata fly shop, and provides 24 hour access to good products for those visiting Rocky Ford, the Sun Lakes and other lesser known stops.  Next time you're headed to the Ford, stop in and see Darc, he has a great fly shop with awesome tying products, and if he's not around you can still get that 4x for fooling the weary basin lunkers.

Weekend Update

Shawn dropping some hooks on the ring game
As summer continues to scorch on through the beginning of August, not much has changed in SW montana.  The roost is like ground hogs day, with eager clients and exhausted guides stumbling past each other while the coffee soaks in.  Last weekend was a nice break in the twilight zone that started with a fun dinner with The Fly Fish Chick, Professor and Little Chick at the end of their vacation in Sheridan.  A combination of great food, Dark and Stormy's and an addicting game of ring on a hook was a great start to the weekend.

"Twitch it, Twitch it!"
Long time guest and close friend Brett was out Thursday through Saturday, and continued to prove that if you fish more through out the year, that you have even better fishing when you come to Montana.  Aside from one day of little fish ball, Brett did his normal job of crushing everything in sight, including some of the best hopper eats I have seen this summer.  Long time friend, new roomate and new SFI guide Shawn rode in the back of the boat for the three days and got to enjoy some hopper eats of his own before he gets back to work.

Ke'lah enjoying some hopper fishing.
Sunday night found us over on the Madison looking for some new scenery and an excuse for some fine margaritas.  We hit up Banditos for an early dinner, launched at Varney around 6, and enjoyed the best time of day with a pile of fish that were looking to eat the chubby.  Ke'lah capped off the day and the great weekend with the fish pictured above, as good a brown trout as she has gotten on the dry.
